This is a Stenonema femoratum mayfly nymph, sometimes called a "Cream Cahill." Mayfly taxonomy has changed dramatically over the years, and unfortunately, the best sources for field or microscope ID available to the non-specialist are out of date. To make the sources sync with today's taxonomy requires various translation sheets. It gets rather confusing. Across the mayflies of North America are many genera and species that have been lumped or reassigned, in many cases to the consternation of anglers who point out that some lumped species contain two or more forms that have different hatch periods as well as different and distinctive body markings. The 8th (VIII) International Pwoermd Writing Month 2017 concluded yesterday. I wrote a lot of pwoermds in April, and posted a few to facebook. I thought I'd dump the lot of them here, including a few that I never got around to posting. Here are two that didn't get posted in April. A few photos and notes for "Matchless"

Alex Gildzen sent me a matchbook in the mail late this January. Alex sent a lot of matchbooks out in the mail this January; and to say receiving one of the matchbooks made my week and cheered me up during a rather depressing few days might seem corny or overstated, but it's true. Here's the matchbook Alex mailed to me: Before moving to New Mexico a few years back, Alex was curator of Special Collections at the Kent State University library. There was "one degree of separation" between us while I was attending college: I had two friends who were work study students at the library and worked for Alex in some capacity. As it goes, I met Alex virtually some years ago, but didn't know him while I was in college. It was a near-miss connection that I didn't realize until many years later.
